Monday Matinee - "The Dolly Sisters"

This weeks Monday Matinee movie is the 1945 Betty Grable hit, "The Dolly Sisters".It also happens to be my favorite movie of all time.

I first saw TDS when I was about 6-7 years old on the old AMC channel. My Grandmother was so excited to see it again and she told me to sit and watch it with her. Boy am I glad that I did. It was instant love. Love for the film, the costumes, the music and of course for Betty Grable. We had a VHS of the film taped off TV that I practically wore out from watching it so much. Thank goodness for the DVD release.

Taken from the Wiki site and from IMDB:

The Dolly Sisters is a 1945 biographical film about the Dolly Sisters, identical twins who became famous as entertainers on Broadway and in Europe in the early years of the twentieth century.
Here is the the Wiki on the REAL Dolly Sisters:

As you can see, they bare little resemblance to the blond pin ups who portray them. It is also rumored that although the film is supposed to take place in the early 1900's, Betty Grable refused to have anything but 40's costumes and hair styles.

The two sisters find success and love, though the road to both is paved with hurdles and sometimes tragedy. The movie is filled with lavish musical numbers and songs. The costumes are pure eye candy, crafted by the talented Orry-Kelly(

My personal favorite part of the film takes place during one of the sisters performances. The entire musical number is about make-up and beauty products and takes place in a giant vanity case!!!! There are even chorus girls dressed as beauty products like lipstick and rouge. *SIGH*

I hope you take time and give this film a watch, it's totally worth it.

Here are some stills to peak your interest further:

Monday Matinee - Intro Post

I am introducing a new feature to the Blog today called "Monday Matinee", where I will do a post on a movie I love each Monday in hopes that if you have not seen it yet that you will do so and end up loving it as much as I do. I will warn you all here and now that I am a HUGE Betty Grable fan, so expect to see her movies here quite a bit, lol. I think shes just perfect. She wasn't the most beautiful creature or the most talented but she captures the era perfectly. Betty had the most winning smile, perfect hair, she was charming and everyone just loved her. When I watch Betty on screen I just want to know her and be her friend. I imagine us spending afternoons shopping for ridiculous tilt hats and spontaneously breaking out into lavish song and dance numbers.

That being said, I will also post more current films as well. I hope everyone will let me know if they watch the films I recommend and if they liked them or not. Also, if anyone has any movies they think I should see then by all means let me know!

A visit from the Vintage Fairy

A week or so ago, we had the pleasure of viewing a home that was for sale during our round of showings. This house was AMAZING. A classic red brick ranch, all original and furnished head to toe in MCM gorgeousness. Every single room was perfection. I would have moved in that day if all the furniture came with the house. The house is still for sale and actually in our price range, but the neighborhood isn't our favorite.

Well when we were in the house I fell head over heels in love with the living room set they had. Everything was Atomic and in 100% pristine condition. The couch was a kelly green, The arm chair was a blue/soft gray and the 2 level end tables were blond wood with side panel flower carvings. LOVE. I wrote the owner a short note before leaving the house asking about buying the living room suite from them but I never got an answer.

Yesterday I decided to stalk Craigslist for any of the items from the house, so I punched in the location and set to looking.Well my stalking paid off because I found a listing for an item that I recognized from the house as well as recognizing the house from the picture. I promptly wrote the seller an email apologizing for being a weirdo and inquired about buying the green couch living room set. I honestly never expected an answer back because I'm sure I sounded like a creepy stalker........I WAS WRONG!!!

The seller got back to me and agreed to sell us the entire living room suite for $475......3 tables, a couch and an armchair. I could not be more excited. We are picking them up in a few weeks because the seller lives in Florida and goes back and forth while trying to sell his parents estate. I would love more of the furniture from the house but this is good enough for now.

The moral of this vintage tale is that if you see something you want, then never surrender until its yours.

Now if I only had a house to put all my stuff in.......damn it.

Shameless Vanity Post

Since I am feeling sort of down after the whole house fiasco, I decided to post some outfit pics of me over the past few weeks......clothes always make me happier.

Dress: Vintage
Shrug: Mandee
Shoes: Charles Albert, Victorias Secret
Belt: Mandee

Top: H&M
Shrug: Mandee
Skirt: Vintage
Shoes: Charles Albert, Victorias Secret
Purse: Vintage
Bracelets: Vintage
Necklace: Disney Couture, present from Derek

Cardigan: Vintage
Top: Mandee
Jeans: Tripp
Shoes: Payless

See, not too many pics to assault you with....I try and remember to take pics but sometimes I'm just in a hurry. MEH. I will try harder in the future.

Well that was a learning experience......

The house viewing pretty much sank down into deep murky waters of disappointment.

Long story short, the parents found all the bad things about the house that Derek and I didn't see because we were blinded by the shiny prospect of having our own home. They found botched electrical jobs, water damage and mold. Then as if that wasn't the worst, the Real Estate Agent mouthed off to my Dad. *UGH* Basically my Dad is an over protective Italian tough guy, just for the record. The Agent told Derek that she wanted him to sign some papers, to which my Dad then replied that he wanted to know what kind of papers they were first and if he could see them. Well, I guess the Agent didn't like that very much because she told my Dad that it was between her and her client and it didn't concern him. *OUCH*

We now need a new Agent.

We also didn't quite like the idea that from the very beginning she tried to push us into every home she showed us. She never listened when we REPEATEDLY told her that we were looking for a Mid Century home that we could restore......everything that was old that we loved she would constantly tell us we could "update" to make more the word "update" is like an evil word to me.

Anyways.....We are going to keep looking and that's really all we can do for now. I'm sure there is a great house out there for us somewhere and we just need to find it. Of course there is always my fantasy that an old couple who has lived in a cute little ranch since the 50's decides to sell their home full of their delightful furniture to us....because that totally could happen you know.

Meet the Parents, Parents Meet the House

As I mentioned before, Derek and I are trying to buy our first home. We have indeed found one that we both love, an adorable 1950's Cape, which we put an offer in for and had said offer accepted.

Today the parents are going to "meet" the house. Derek and I are very fortunate because we have parents that are being very generous in helping us buy a home. Therefore, they of course want to see the house first. Today will also be the first time that Derek's father meets mine. Derek's parents are divorced and do not get along at all so my Dad has met his Mother just not his Father. I'm kinda nervous about that seeing as D's Dad is kinda laid back and my Dad is a crazy Italian. We will see.....

The house is really adorable. There are 2 big bedrooms and a full bath on the 2nd floor, 3 bedrooms, a living room, kitchen and dining room on the ground floor. Then there is a full basement with a built in bar area and a separate laundry room and work room for tools. The kitchen is my fave part though. It's yellow and white right now with a curved counter, flecked Formica counter tops and all. The appliances are updated but we plan on getting some new ones. The best part is that when we were down in the laundry room we found the original refrigerator from upstairs!! It's yellow and has a bottom freezer.....I love it to bits!!! As of now we have no clue if it works but if not then we are going to try and get it fixed and move it back to the kitchen.

The house really just needs some cosmetic work to make it look awesome again, which is fine with me because I love projects.

The inspector is going to go tomorrow morning and then let us know everything. I really hope this works out, ugh its crazy!!

I am filed with nerves, excitement, fear,'s pretty much a mixed bag at this point.

Dear Readers......

That's me over there. My name is Miss Patti Darling and I will be your humble Blogger.
I have never had a public forum for my thoughts before.....probably because I never really thought anyone would care to read about my life. I really only just got into reading and following Blogs this past year at the urging of my Boyfriend, Derek. Needless to say I am totally hooked. I love reading about the fun things other people are doing, what they are wearing, buying, doing to their homes....I'm such a voyeur.
I follow mostly vintage/pin up/ mid century/spooky and doll themed blogs. Those are the things I love, the things I surround myself with and the things that I will be writing about here.

And who am I? I am a 28 year old on again off again make-up artist, specializing in SFX. I live on Long Island, but I have lived in Queens,The Bronx,Indiana,England,Las Vegas and Brooklyn. I recently lost my craptacular job at a salon and have since decided to move in with the Boyfriend.

I collect vintage clothing and housewares, mostly from the 50's and 60's. I also collect spooky things, dolls, anything Snow White related and some other random stuff. I'm also a Disney freak as you will learn.

Currently the BF and I are trying to buy our first home. It is the scariest thing I have ever done....ever. If you have been through this before then you know what I mean, if not then you will someday.

Well that's about it for now. I'm sure you will get to know me much better very soon, until then.......
